Place to visit in Punakha

Punakha is the administrative centre of Punakha dzongkhag, one of the 20 districts of Bhutan. Punakha was the capital of Bhutan and the seat of government until 1955, when the capital was moved to Thimphu. It is about 72 km away from Thimphu and it takes about 3 hours by car from the capital Thimphu. Unlike Thimphu it is quite warm in winter and hot in summer. It is located at an elevation of 1,200 metres above sea level and rice is grown as the main crop along the river valleys of two main rivers of Bhutan, the Pho Chu and Mo Chu. Dzongkha is widely spoken in this district.

Chimi Lhakhang

Chimi Lhakhang Also Known As Chime Lhakhang Is A Buddhist Monastery In Punakha District And Is Located Near Lobesa. It Was Built In 1499 By The 14th Drukpa Hierarch, Nawang Choegyel.Chimi Lhakhang Is Located 10km From Punakha Near A Village Called Sopsokha. This Lhakhang Stands On A Round Hillock Which Is Also Called Breast Of A Lady Because Of Its Round Shape, By Lama Kunley.

Punakha Dzong

Rinpung Dzong is a large dzong - Buddhist monastery and fortress - of the Drukpa Lineage of the Kagyu school in Paro District, Bhutan.One of the most beautiful Bhutanese architectural masterpieces.

Tashichho Dzong

Tashichhoedzong is a Buddhist monastery and fortress on the northern edge of the city of Thimphu in Bhutan, on the western bank of the Wang Chu.

Sangchhen Dorji Lhuendrup Lhakhang

The Lhakhang Is A Nunnery Plus Temple Perched On A Ridge Overlooking Toebesa, Punakha And Wangduephodrang Valleys.The Lhakhang Was Founded By His Holiness The Je Khenpo And Was Attainded By The Fourth King Druk Gyalpo Along With 100 Local Peoples Of Punakha.The Lhakhang Or Nunnery Complex Consist Of 70 Rooms Initially Started With 41 Nuns.

Nalanda Buddhist Institute

Nalanda Buddhist Institute Also Known As Daley Goenpa Or Dalida By The Locals Is A Buddhist Monastic Institute. It Is Located In Western Part Of Punakha District Below Talo Monastery And Above Walakha. This Can Be Seen From Dochula Pass And Is About 25min Drive From The Main Highway To Punakha

Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Chorten Lies On Hills Above Punakha Valley, Is A Perfect Example Of Mesmerizing Combination Of Tradition And Architecture Of Asian Country.
